Dear Friends,
As of today, I am retiring from the music industry.
I had an intensely moving spiritual experience that led me to believe I am not yet fulfilling my destiny on this earth. I am leaving the business of music to pursue my true calling as a poet.
Perhaps I would have been wiser to call myself a poet from the start; when you tell people you are a musician, the first thing they want to know is “how good” you are, and only after that, if they truly listen, do they consider if you have anything to say. I started writing and performing songs because I do have something to say, and while I got “good” in the process, nothing really changed. So I was being recognized for being talented but nobody was listening. It’s hardly a surprise; we live in times governed by the American Idol as opposed to the American Idiom, and the only cure is to reinvent the idiom so it becomes the more attractive option.
The music industry is running scared and is rife with a parade of fearful artists and executives who have grown more concerned with keeping themselves afloat financially than speaking to the hearts and minds of the American public. I have always had the sensation that by staying true to myself and to my craft, I can become great. And I recently found myself sinking into the same patterns of mediocrity and compromise that are the downfall of so many potentially great people who never hit their stride. I love writing and playing music, but this industry is not well and at present is not equipped to provide the appropriate venue for my words.
As of today, I have discontinued all my previous albums and merchandise. If you are interested in purchasing the final few copies of my album, follow the PayPal link below and you can order online- we will take the link down when they sell out. At that point, I’m sure you can find one or two on e-bay or get a burned copy from your friends. In the future, I will be writing under a pen name.
Thank you for all of your support; I could not have gotten this far without you. And I've had a wonderful time. But, from where I stand, the comfort of moderate success will never be a substitute for the pursuit of truth.
Sincerely,
Martin Storrow
